DJ Mahalo

DJ Mahalo has always gravitated to music, specifically Hip Hop and R&B and was blessed to be influenced and around technology at an early age. DJ Mahalo is half white and half filipino and spent his early days around his white mom who performed as a country music singer/songwriter and played guitar. DJ Mahalo was heavily influenced by his aunts. DJ Mahalo’s Filipino aunt, was the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Novell. His white aunt was one of the top pianists in country music and was an early employee of Microsoft and had a television show on the public access channel in Silicon Valley during the 80’s reviewing the latest computer technology.

After college, DJ Mahalo received an internship with Felton Pilate, the owner of Felstar Studios (known for Confunkshun and MC Hammer). At this time DJ Mahalo was working for Sony in San Jose and formed a male four part harmony high energy singing group working under Classified Records (known for Jocelyn Enriquez). DJ Mahalo’s first and largest show was performing as the opening act at the (COPA) Oakland Lowrider car show at the Oakland Coliseum.

DJ Mahalo worked for Esther Lopez the owner of Diamond Records, along with Maharaji and Quazedelic (formerly from Sir Mix a Lot’s crew). After recording music with several artists and working on multiple projects for graphics, DJ Mahalo started his own label called North View Records. His two artists were Family Bidnez and Shiesty Sean and he recorded an unreleased album with both artisits.

Originally DJ Mahalo went by “Mackhal” working along with Stan “Quazedelic” Harris in major recording studios in the Bay Area and collaborated, recorded, mixed and produced with some of the top producers and artists in the industry such as George Clinton, Confunkshun, MC Hammer, DJ Uneek, Bone Thugs and Harmony, Ghetto Boys, E-40, B Legit, Levitti, Tony! Toni! Toné!, and EnVouge to name a few. Mahal has also worked for or directly with the following entertainment companies: Sony Entertainment, Sony Pictures, Sony Signatures, Ruthless Records, Kingpin Records, Classified Records, Diamond Records, Northview Records, Tommy Boy Records, and Smoked Out Records.

In the late 90’s, DJ Mahalo worked for Sony Signatures, the largest music merchandising company in the world, with all of the major artists from Michael Jackson to the Beattle’s to name a few. The company was founded by another one of his mentors Dell Furano who along with Bill Graham are credited for starting the concert merchandising industry. DJ Mahalo eventually became the IT Manager for the Sony Signatures office located on the 3rd floor in the TriStar Building on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City.

DJ Mahalo worked at night as a sound engineer with one of his mentors, music producer Greg Cauthen at his music recording studio in Torrance. Greg produced the platinum hit single “I Miss You” by Aaron Hall” and recorded and performed with artists like Troop and Prince to name a few. DJ Mahalo recorded and worked with some of the top names in the West Coast Hip Hop and R&B industry.

While working with Greg, he met Larry “L-Jay” Johnson who became one of DJ Mahalo’s best friends and another mentor. L-Jay produced songs for Babyface, New Edition and an unknown rap duo that had been signed to Ruthless Records. This led to working directly with that group called Nation Unknown or NX for short, which was signed by the late great Eazy-E himself. The duo goes by the names of Lethal and Dekumpozed. DJ Mahalo and NX worked with artists and producers like DJ Uneek, Militia, and Bone Thugs and Harmony to name a few for a couple years in the early 2000’s. Once Tomica Wright took over Ruthless Records, the label went into complete disarray and the album and music videos were never widely distributed or promoted.

DJ Mahalo has also been practicing MMA for over 25 years. He is an original member and former ground coach at Zhong Luo’s DragonHouse MMA academy in San Francisco and is looking to start his own MMA school in Hawaii near downtown in the Chinatown district of Honolulu on the island of Oahu called Tigers Den MMA academy.

DJ Mahalo is also a motorcycle enthusiast and his father is the co-founder of the Filipino-American Motorcycle Club and a co-founder of Biker Dahan which is the largest Filipino biker event in the world. He also served as the webmaster for the San Jose Hells Angels website for over 15 years. DJ Mahalo received his current nickname as “Mahalo” with the Koa Puna motorcycle club as a patched member for 8 years on Maui.

Based on his expertise, life experiences, passion and faith, DJ Mahalo hopes to leave a lasting legacy by using technology and music to make the world a better place by teaching the younger generation about what is possible and what they can achieve.
